Change in land tenure / land use

M. Gutteridge, W. Hall & A. Hanna

The aim of this project was to create a series of maps and accompanying statistics to illustrate changes in land tenure and land use across the rangelands for the past five decades.

Covering most of the central and northern region of Australia, the major commercial use of rangelands is low density pastoral grazing. An understanding of the evolution in land tenure and land use can help scientists and resource managers to develop perspectives and insights into the broad scale impacts of human exploitation of the natural environment. Furthermore it allows the analyst to place these historical snapshots within the socio-economic framework of the day.
